Francesco Rosselli, a painter and engraver, created this panorama at the end of the 15th century in the cartographic workshop found in Costa San Giorgio, Florence. He also produced splendid Ptolemaic planispheres but this particular work was reproduced by many cosmographies published in northern Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries. The original can be found in the Friedrich Museum in Berlin but a splendid 19th century reproduction can be admired in the Florentine museum “Firenze com’era” (“Florence as it was”). Realized according to the copper engraving technique it consists of several sheets on cuts of cloth, which improves its maintenance, makes its legibility casier and facilitates the transport. The last process is the watercolour painting (handwork), in order to obtain a map with a nice polychromatic effect.
