"GIAMBATTISTA FALDA, who is the author of this beautiful prospective map of Rome, was born in Valduggia, Lombardy, ( date of birth unknown), and died in Rome between 1669 and 1691. After 'La Tempesta'/'The Storm' he was one of the most prolific Roman designers and engravers of the17th cen¬tury. He used the famous house of de Rossi for the production of the maps. In his work he used the techniques of his ti me but a/so distinguished him¬self by his attention to detail in the designs and good taste in the ornamen¬tal figures. This map was produced in vertical projection with raising/elevation and was the predominating map until1748 when the great production of Nolli came to light. Produced in 1676 this large murai map shows us ali the beauty of ancient Rome. Realized according to the copper engraving technique it consists of several sheets on cuts of cloth, which improves its maintenance, makes its legibility casier and facilitates the transport. The last process is the watercolour painting (handwork), in order to obtain a map with a nice polychromatic effect."
