"Camillo Borghese was crowned Pope Paul V the Reformer on May 16, 1605. He died on January 28, 1621. It was during his papacy that the beautiful, largest and most detailed map of the Vatican palace was produced. It was probably created by Maggi but there is no name, neither of the artist nor the engraver. Compared to other works done by Maggi this work uses the same style and technique. Maggi, (born between 1556 and 1572 and died after 1621), was a prolific artist especially in the production of architectural prints. The date and the printing are visible at the end of the legend: Romae ex typographia lacobi . Mascardi MOCXV superiorum permissi. In this magnificent map in the upper righthand corner, there is a dedication to Paul V and at the beginning of the legend a preface to 'the readers' which are both signed by Abbot Paolo de Angelis, who had a secondary role in the production of this engraving. The work represehts the basilica of Saint Peter and the Vatican palace as they were in 1615. Realized according to the copper engraving technique it consists of several sheets on cuts of cloth, which improves its maintenance, makes its legibility casier and facilitates the transport. "
